WinterStorm are pleased to welcome the return of Northern Irish, muli-instrumentalist Pat McManus to the November 2023 Legends and Legacies event in Troon, Scotland.
Hailing from a musical family, Pat and his brothers John and Tommy played many of their parents’ instruments from early ages and were soon inspired by Celtic rock band Horslips to switch to electric ones, forming their first band Pulse. An interviewer soon commented on how young the three brothers were, calling them Mama's Boys, leading them to change their band name to exactly that.
The band quickly won over live audiences and were soon supporting many of the rock bands that came to Belfast and Dublin. Mama's Boys released ‘The Official Bootleg’ (1980) and ‘Plug It In’ (1982), both self-financed albums causing them to be noticed within the industry and resulting in them touring with Wishbone Ash. The band’s third album ‘Turn It Up’ increased their popularity, with Phil Lynott personally asking them to support Thin Lizzy on their farewell tour.
A cover of ‘Mama We're All Crazee Now’ (Slade) gained Mama's Boys substantial airplay in America with radio stations playing the original, Mama's Boys and Quiet Riot versions and asking listeners to vote on which one was best. Mama's Boys often triumphed resulting in some prestigious tour slots alongside Ratt and Rush in the US.
Pat soon began to work as a session musician alongside the band for artists such as John Parr, Tricky and Samantha Fox. Mama's Boys released ‘Power And Passion’ in 1985 which saw the band tour with Bon Jovi and Ratt in the US. Mama's Boys eventually disbanded following a struggle to stabilise the line-up with a vocalist, and the sad death of Tommy to a long battle with leukaemia in 1994. Pat and John eventually returned under a new name of Celtus following much encouragement from fans which saw them tour with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Paul Carrick, Deacon Blue and Jimmy Nail.
In 2001 Pat left London to return to live in his native Northern Ireland. Very quickly he joined up with two bands, firstly The Painkillers and then Indian, he also returned to playing traditional music working on various projects which included the 'Hidden Fermanagh' project which culminated in Pat and the other musicians representing Northern Ireland at the White House. By 2006 he decided he would like to return to more extensive touring and had also written and recorded his first solo album, 'In My Own Time'. By 2008 the Pat McManus Band were touring throughout Europe at many prestigious venues and festivals, collaborating with acts such as Bernie Marsden (also appearing at WinterStorm 2023!), Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash and other acts such as the Scorpions and Magnum. Countless albums and DVD's have been released over the past 17 years and the band has toured non-stop. The line up today consists of Paul Faloon on drums who has been with Pat for the last fifteen years, and Plunkett McComb on bass and backing vocals who joined the line up just over two years ago but has been working with Pat as his co producer for the last ten years.
Everyone at WinterStorm very much look forward to welcoming the Pat McManus Band back to the Steve Strange main stage in November at the Legends and Legacies event in Troon, following their performance at WinterStorm in 2019.
